This project explores alternative ceramic firing methods through a collaborative, community-led process. This project builds on previous ceramics work on Sherkin Island and introduces alternative firing methods using locally sourced materials. Central to this is the use of a naturally occurring clay seam on the island,
Participants will learn to dig, process, and utilise this clay. The workshop includes building a pit kiln and a teepee kiln, firing bisque work, and exploring surface effects using organic materials such as seaweed, sawdust, and natural combustibles. The emphasis is on sustainability, community collaboration, and place-based making.
